Destination Park Design

Case Study - Withy Grove, South Ribble Borough Council

Budget: £560,000

“Children and young people from across South Ribble and beyond know about this playground. They are using it, enjoying it and telling their friends about it.”

Mayor Kath Beattie

The Project

South Ribble Borough Council wanted to provide an exciting play area that had the potential to become a key development project. The play area would represent the first stage of the councils Renewal 4 programme, which aims to regenerate and improve surrounding areas.

The council wanted the area to engage all abilities and age groups, making play accessible and fun for all.

The requirements were met by creating a fresh and vibrant area that stimulates the senses of all ages. By using a range of themed zones Proludic were able to provide equipment that would suit a large range of abilities and personalities. The landscape was further enhanced by including changes in levels, planting and a variety of surfacing types.

One of the prominent issues that Proludic were able to address so well is the representation of the teenage age group in their design. The Dynamic zone equipment is dedicated specifically to teens and replicates exhilarating sport sensations such as parachuting or rock climbing.

Withy Grove is now considered to be one of the biggest and best destination parks in the country, and was awarded the ROSPA 5 star award for excellent play value and inclusive opportunities for disabled children.
